The bulk of these songs were written in 2013. I had just completed a 17.5 hour marathon freestyle during the global art contest ArtPrize and we had recently released The 5iveit LP. As a result, more people were paying attention to our art than ever before. We had worked diligently for years to build the foundation for what happened in 2013-14 and it should have felt great.
It was during this period I learned first hand that validation and praise coming from outside forces does not produce happiness. It became more and more difficult for me to accept compliments, awards and love. This can be heard in the lyrics and the tone of my voice throughout the album.
At this same time I started working with The Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan, where I learned the signs and symptoms of mental illness, in turn realizing my own depression.
The content of Bald Since Birth revolves around self reflection, self analysis, and progression. If you listen to the 5iveit LP, 5iveit EP and Bald Since Birth you can hear the analysis throughout, but it isn't until this project that the idea of entering therapy is introduced.
We become our routines and I am still working to find a proper balance in my life. I feel better today than ever, but am well aware that the negative practices I've developed over the course of the past 20 years can reappear any day and I'm doing my best to keep moving forward. Therapy has been amazing for me. But I did stop going once it felt like I was back on track and I regressed a bit as a result. I'm getting back on the couch next week and looking forward to it.
We hope that these songs motivate you to analyze your own routines. Please know that things can get better, that you don't have to move through life alone. You aren't the only one who feels like you do and better days are on the horizon, if you're willing to do the work. You are competing with no other human but yourself. You have unlimited potential. You are a 1 of 1 and the world needs you.
Nixon created a diverse soundscape for these lyrics to live on...we are proud of what we've created and have many ideas of what to create next.
Thank You for supporting us, loving us, and being a part of our lives. We love you right back and look forward to all that is to come.
